Ahh, the beach, a beautiful and tranquil place that offers warmth, relaxation and fun times for all. A dream day for many of us is sitting on the beach on a comfortable chair with great friends, good books and nothing else to do but to soak up some wonderful vitamin D. This dream beach day may all too often be overshadowed with riding waves and building sand castles with our kids (also fun, just much less relaxing). Beach season is here and the desire to feel beautiful at the beach emerges, can’t we all just look like the Kardashians, the epitome of beach beauties? YOU CAN feel confident at the beach in the right suit, so where does one to shop for this perfect suit? Friends, I need to tell you about Gottex – an amazing suit that offers sleek, slim and flattering styles that will make you look like an E celebrity in your own right on the beach. The colors and styles are incredible and the Gottex lycra is incredibly durable. If you care for your suit properly it will be an investment that will last for many seasons to come. I love the assortment of Gottex found at Everything But Water. I heart the swimwear that designers have exclusively made for this store. The suits are designed to fit and flatter a “real womans” figure. The Gottex is designed to give every body a sleek and comfortable fit with its high percentage of lycra. This season you will also find incredible beach cover ups that also double as stylish tunics. The tunic cover ups are so versatile, layer them with a tank and wear them with skinny jeans and/or white pants for evening.

http://www.everythingbutwater.com/

We have heard for decades that swimwear and jeans are the most dreaded items for women to find and to love. The GREAT news is that once you find a pair of jeans and a swimsuit you LOVE you will wear them forever until they are completely worn. The designers of today are offering incredible styles and fabrics that fit the body without looking tight and this gives a women confidence in her clothing. It’s a whole new world for us with many options of figure flattering styles – it shouldn’t be painful any longer. I am committed to help YOU find the right styles and the right fit so that YOU feel YOUR BEST EVERY DAY (even at the beach), YOU DESERVE IT!

Yours in style,

Fashion swapping is sweeping the nation, offering women a fun opportunity to swap the items you don’t wear from your closets for items that YOU will WEAR! You know the items that I am talking about, the items you ALL have consuming too much space in your closets right NOW, the items that you purchased on an impulse, the ones that don’t flatter you today and the ones you simply don’t like anymore. Imagine taking these stylish and very gently used accessories, shoes, and clothing that you currently don’t wear and exchanging them for items that you will LOVE and will WEAR. This can all be a dream come true when you hold your very own Fashion Swapping Event with friends. Try it, your friends will LOVE you for coordinating this unique girls night out.

Here is ALL that you need to know when planning your swap. Plan your swap with friends who you know have a closet full of clothes and complain that they having NOTHING to wear, these are the friends who will most enjoy this experience. I know ladies, this speaks to most of us. Limit the amount of items that your attendees can bring to keep things more manageable especially for your first one. You might even recommend that your friends bring accessories handbags, jewelry, scarves etc. Accessories are not limiting by size and fit EVERYONE! Once your guests arrive with their merchandise you will organize the swapping items by category. for example an accessory table, a rack for tops and bottoms etc. You may also want to categorize by price point, I like to set up my swap organizing the goods into three categories of price, Chic (cheap), Moderate (middle) and Couture. This way, if someone brings a pair of Gucci sunglasses, it will be categorized in the couture category. This woman would then choose something of equal or higher value. This encourages some women to swap some of those investment pieces that they no longer wear. These women can feel good knowing that in exchange, they can choose from a selection of equal or higher price points. Each category is color coded, for example, Chic, (yellow), Moderate, (green) Couture (pink). This way when your friend comes with three items that would go into the moderate grouping, she would get her name put into the hat three times on green paper. Names are then drawn one by one for the women to come up to select from the respective categories.

You might even be motivated to organize a community fashion swap and open the swapping doors to many more women in your community. It can also be an opportunity to request a small donation of $5.00 to participate that can go directly to a womens’ shelter in the community or another charity of choice.

ENJOY – its good for YOU, good for others and GREAT for the environment, you are recycling and your wardrobe is reaping the benefits!

Yours in style,
Debbie

I am constantly asked by women over 30, how to dress trendy and stylish without looking too young. The fashion magazines are filled with wonderful, fun, feminine and for the most part functional clothing options for this season. Gone are the days of impractical, disposable trends that NO ONE would ever wear. I am thrilled to see the runways filled with fashions from several designers like Stella McCartney and Donna Karan that exude and flatter real women who want to be stylish AND comfortable!

Here are a few of my recommendations to turn up the heat in your closet this Spring.

1)BUY A SCARF IN A COLOR AND/OR PRINT.

Adding a scarf as an accent to a basic tee long sleeve or short with a pair of jeans adds instant STYLE. Purchase this scarf in a color that enhances the color of your eyes, aqua and purple are great colors to enhance brown eyes. Pinks and greens look great with blue eyes. This is an easy and fun way to spice up a casual look.

My scarf website recommendation is:

http://www.affordablescarves.com

2) BUY A PAIR OF ANIMAL PRINT SHOES.

A pair of zebra print ballet flats or a cheetah print wedge can add an instant boost of style to your wardrobe this spring. Animals prints can be worn back with the great colors of the season, the corals, greens, blues and yellows. Wear them with casual dresses and/or jeans.

My website recommendation:

http:www.shopstyle.com

They have a pair from Spiegel – a buckled, animal print wedge $44.00
STOP IT.. too cute.

3)BUY A FEW FUN DRESSES THIS SPRING.

Dresses are easy, comfortable and make a simple and polished statement this season for ANY woman regardless of lifestyle or budget. Look to add a few different styles into your closet. Add a black, one of color and perhaps a printed dress. You will find them easier and more comfortable than pants and a shirt some days.

A few of my affordable favorite dresses can be found on:

http://www.topshop.com.

I found a great cotton smock dress in navy blue for only $70.00, so cute worn with a simple scarf and flip flops and or a cute pair of ankle boots.

4) BUY A SLEEVELESS VEST.

This trend is a take off of the must-wear cardigan for layering this Spring and Summer. Layering and accessorizing are fun and easy ways to always look polished and trendy. They can be worn over tank tops or tee shirts, or with a blouse for different look.

I found a great Ellen Tracy sleeveless black vest for $79.50 on:

http://www1.macys.com

Happy Spring SHOPPING!

and remember…

PRESENT YOUR PERSONAL BEST EVERY DAY – YOU DESERVE IT.

There are so many reasons to get inspired each season to wear beautiful outfits and to look YOUR BEST! A new season can provide a good reason to get healthier and to get dressed like you MEAN it, EVERY DAY! Many recently tuned it to watch the Oscars but fashionistas are most interested in the designer clothing being worn by amazing celebrities. What I admire most is the ability for the designers to dial into the personal style and shape of each of the celebrity models. It is said that a women of great style knows what looks good on her and works it like nobody’s business. Wearing clothing and accessories that complement your body, your personality and your lifestyle will guarantee you a feeling of CONFIDENCE!

As a fashion stylist (who dreams every night about being the Rachel Zoe of CT and MA.) I can NOT help but be completely obsessed with Rachel Zoe and the incredible business that she has built branding herself. She exudes the Hollywood glam culture with her love of Chanel and Lagerfeld. Check out some of her stunning accessory items on http://www.qvc.com.

Other big designers are also hitting the bullseye with their affordable collections that are now available at
TARGET STORES. Zac Posen and Jean Paul Gaultier both have collections in stores now. I LOVE the dresses, the trench coats, the collections are a must see.

GREAT DESIGNER DUDS at a fraction of their designer prices. I hope these tips help you to expand your closet full of clothes that you LOVE this season.

All of my best
Your Confidence Building Stylist,
Debbie

The 82nd annual Academy Awards air this Sunday evening, March 7th. In Hartford, CT., the Academy Awards provide an amazing platform for local socialites and supporters to raise funds for the HIV/AID service providers in Connecticut. People from all across the state gather at Hartford’s DISH restaurant to experience this unique and exciting fashionable fundraiser.

This year I am MOST impressed with CARC’s ability to recognize and celebrate some of our cities own fashion design talent. Oscar evening is an evening in which top designers showcase their creations on stunning celebrities that saunter down the red carpet. On Sunday evening, CARC will recognize the fashion design talent that live among us in our cities and towns. These designers come from our Connecticut fashion design schools, Gibbs College, http://www/gobbscollegenorwalk.edu and NiRo, a school where fashion meets philanthropy (860) 724-6476. NiRo encourages the cities youth to explore their creative spirit through design. This year several designers have come forth and participated in a “PROJECT RUNWAY” type competition for the CARC, Oscar event. The designers have been working on a tight $150 budget and with only 2 weeks to design and create gowns for several of our honored guests. The guests will wear these locally designed gowns on Sunday evening and the designers will be judged on design and creativity. One lucky designer will be chosen as our lucky winner. One lucky bidder will also win a gown designed by our newly crowned top Connecticut Designer. What an exciting tribute to local people, local schooling, local fundraising and local SUPPORT!

In supporting and reaching out to other organizations you build community confidence and trust. I applaud and appreciate community organizations that join forces during a time in which we need to rely on each other more than ever. I am proud to work with organizations that embrace each others strengths and talents and support each other.

Here is a sneak peek of our designers hard at work getting ready for Oscar Night 2010 in Hartford. For more information please check the website http://www.ctaidscoalition.org, tickets are $55, $100 per couple.

As a professional, I help women de-clutter and clean a very sacred space in their home, their CLOSET. What I find most interesting is the emotional attachment to clothing. Now, I love and appreciate clothing as much as the next woman but there comes a point where it can all become too much and too stressful. You know the feeling, when you truly can’t make a quick “what to wear” decision anymore. I loved reading this months O magazine that shows even OPRAH finds it necessary to purge and clean. It is truly a stress relieving activity. You know that feeling, even when you organize the junk drawer in the kitchen, it feels so good to re-gain that sense of order.

Whenever possible I welcome the opportunity to share my message of celebrating who you are TODAY, your current body and lifestyle. Everyone deserves to look their personal best beginning NOW. You begin this process by eliminating the excess in your closet. Getting dressed every morning should be fun and exciting, it sets the tone of energy for the day. This months cover of Oprah isn’t a new message but a gentle reminder. Do yourself a favor, take the time to re-gain control. Your closet is a wonderful space to begin this self-fulfilling task. When you start to clean your closet, begin with getting rid of the obvious, you know those items that you HAVEN’T worn in a year or more. Please note, that it IS OK TO LET THEM GO, REGARDLESS of a memory or how much you once paid. Donate these items and allow someone else to enjoy their beauty and to create their own memories. What a wonderful and generous gesture, suddenly letting go, doesn’t seem so difficult. Once the first phase of elimination is complete you can begin truly looking at the rest of the items in your closet. Ask yourself, how do I feel when I wear these clothes? Do I feel confident, does this shirt, or jacket, or pair of pants flatter my shape right NOW? If you answer no, eliminate it, donate it, send it to the tailor for alteration or discard altogether, depending on how it looks. This process will show you how to begin building a closet full of clothes you LOVE. Once you begin consciously becoming aware of your positive features, you will be taking the first step towards building a higher level of self-esteem and self-respect. Before you know it, other good habits start to become a reality, you begin making better food choices and you may even begin exercising. You start LOVING your look and it only gets better from here!

ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY!

What is on your mind this month? Most likely, you are consciously reviewing what you eat, how much you exercise and how you look. The start of a new year, and a new DECADE, brings with it a renewed mindset of self-improvement, self-enhancement and self – acceptance. I have heard 2010 referred to as the decade of the individualist! My interpretation of this statement reminds me of the airplane analogy. When the oxygen mask is released, take care of yourself first. In daily life be happy, feel confident, BE YOUR BEST SELF every day and everyone around you will benefit and become better themselves. You will inspire and motivate, respect yourself first and the respect of others will naturally follow. I ask you, reading this blog to look in the mirror today and smile! Select a feature or features about yourself that you LOVE (and you should LOVE several) focus on the positive and accept your natural beauty TODAY! Congratulations, you have now begun the process of embracing self-respect. There is ONLY ONE OF YOU! Accept, be proud and OWN every bit of who you are inside and out. It is the only way to become the person you want to become. Now, lets talk about STYLE and how to present your best self ! My personal favorite part of this process !

I want you all to also recognize that having GREAT STYLE doesn’t have to cost alot of money. Here are a few tips on how to begin styling your body and instantly feeling more confident.

Begin choosing color when looking a buying new tops and jackets. We can all relate to a time when we have received compliments based on the color we chose to wear that day. If you LOVE your eyes, start selecting tops that flatter the color of your eyes, it adds an instant boost to your outfit.

Buy clothing that fits and flatters and isnt boxy in shape. Choose styles of clothing that frame the body – that create an hourglass figure, regardless of your current shape. Buying clothing that is too big only makes you look bigger. STOP HIDING!

Take pride in yourself when you get dressed every morning. Wear those jeans that you feel great in, add an accessory that polishes your casual outfit, add a fun purse and feel good about who you ARE, YOU DESERVE TO !

MY FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP !!!!!!!!!!

Savers, a chain of thrift stores! They are a national chain with stores across the U.S. and Canada. They offer an amazing assortment of quality clothing at an AMAZING PRICE. I admire and respect the neat and orderly conditions of the store, the friendly staff and the ENDLESS SELECTION of designer merchandise! They also partner with charitable organizations across the country. It is truly a fashion treasure hunt. If you want to begin re-inventing your look or you simply want to add some new, fun and flattering pieces to your wardrobe, make this a new weekly habit! Stop in to your local Savers and see what is in store for you. I recently spoke to a customer who shopped in the newest store in Orange, CT. She came back twice in one day and said the shopping experience at Savers was better than you know what ? HA

Here are some pictures that I took visiting the new store in Orange. You can see, I had a blast building outfits and dressing the shoppers. HAPPY SHOPPING !

~THE SPRING FASHION FORECAST looks H-O-T for 2010 ~

The month of January oftens sparks the thought of re-invention and self-improvement. In fashion, it’s also a time to see what the designers have in store for us for the Spring. It’s a time when we often loose the layers and expose more of our body, hence another motivator to get healthy and in shape!

Spring 2010, I’m calling the season of the LEG and SHOULDER!

Designers are showing interesting cutting designs and exposing lots of shoulder. In tops, this is a wonderful way to dress up a pair of dark denim, black pants, shorter shirts and for shoes: shoe boots or heels. Wear these sexy tops out with friends, to an event or to dinner with your husband.

GET SHOULDER READY with this exercise from Carolyn: There are actually three parts of the shoulder (deltoids), the front, the side and the rear of the shoulder. One exercise that you want to incorporate into your routine in order to hit all these shoulder muscles and get sexy toned and ready to be revealed shoulders is called a shoulder press. This exercise can easily be performed at home or your gym, and is many times found in a lot of group fitness classes(ask your instructor to include in your routine). You will need to purchase dumbbells for home. The weight should be something that will allow you to be able to accomplish 12 repetitions for each exercise. 5-8 pounds is a good suggested starting weight for most women. You should do 2-3 sets of twelve repetitions. Once you are able to push out more than 12 repetitions, you should increase weight. This exercise should not be done more than 2-3 times weekly.

Hemlines are coming up ladies ! Boy shorts, hot pants and dresses with high slits scream, sporty and sexy! Balance out this legginess by wearing them back with sporty jackets and flowy, embellished tops and substantial footwear like ankle boots or a heavier heeled shoe.

GET THOSE LEGS in TIP TOP SHAPE with this exercise from Carolyn: I love plie squats for an overall leg work out. This exercise will get the inner and outer thigh as well as you front of the legs(quadriceps) and back of the legs(hamstrings). Perform this with weights resting on your legs. I would suggest 12-20 repetitions and 2-3 sets done with weight that will challenge you. A typical starting weight would be 8-12 pounds. 2-3 times a week is also suggested.

Fashion Eyewear is a fun way to infuse great style into your daily look. For many of us, we are required to wear glasses daily as a result of our eyesight. Many fashionistas also wear stylish frames just to have the “look” that frames create. Top designers have changed the way we see eyewear, creating frames that offer great color and pattern. Your glasses are an extension of your personality and lifestyle! There are a few important things to consider when selecting your stylish eyewear.

1) Compliment your face shape with the right style frame. Choose a frame that balances the shape of your face. For example, if you have a round face, choose a frame that is more square in shape.

2) Choose a style of frame that compliments your skin tone, eye color and scale of face. If you are petite for example, you want to consider a frame that isn’t to thick and overpowering. A frame should flatter, not hide.

3) Consider the look that you like and are naturally drawn to. Do you prefer a frame that stands out, that is more bold or a frame that is subtle and disappears? There are many choices available. For many of you, the ability to buy into a brand like Prada, Gucci, Coach even David Yurman is now a reality. These high-end designers all have eyewear collections that are much more affordable than their higher priced accessories. It is a fun way to experience the luxury of wearing designer brands.

Embrace the trends and the many styles available today in eyewear. Changing your eyewear can change your look. You might consider several pairs of glasses to create several looks for your lifestyle and your wardrobe. Choose a more conservative look for your daytime dress for the office and a pair of bold frames with color and/or a pattern for the weekend. You will find that you love the ability to create these different looks depending on your outfit choice and/or mood for the day. Having several pairs of eyewear is fast becoming as common as having multiple necklaces to choose from when accessorizing your outfits.

Take care of your eye health, get routine checkups and dress your eyes daily with a stylish pair of glasses!

If you are interested in a personal SPECS APPEAL consultation when choosing your next pair of eyewear contact me through http://www.harveyandlewis.com and schedule your personal appointment with me. It’s free and I guarantee that you will LOVE the look we create!
