What is on your mind this month? Most likely, you are consciously reviewing what you eat, how much you exercise and how you look. The start of a new year, and a new DECADE, brings with it a renewed mindset of self-improvement, self-enhancement and self – acceptance. I have heard 2010 referred to as the decade of the individualist! My interpretation of this statement reminds me of the airplane analogy. When the oxygen mask is released, take care of yourself first. In daily life be happy, feel confident, BE YOUR BEST SELF every day and everyone around you will benefit and become better themselves. You will inspire and motivate, respect yourself first and the respect of others will naturally follow. I ask you, reading this blog to look in the mirror today and smile! Select a feature or features about yourself that you LOVE (and you should LOVE several) focus on the positive and accept your natural beauty TODAY! Congratulations, you have now begun the process of embracing self-respect. There is ONLY ONE OF YOU! Accept, be proud and OWN every bit of who you are inside and out. It is the only way to become the person you want to become. Now, lets talk about STYLE and how to present your best self ! My personal favorite part of this process !
I want you all to also recognize that having GREAT STYLE doesn’t have to cost alot of money. Here are a few tips on how to begin styling your body and instantly feeling more confident.
- Begin choosing color when looking a buying new tops and jackets. We can all relate to a time when we have received compliments based on the color we chose to wear that day. If you LOVE your eyes, start selecting tops that flatter the color of your eyes, it adds an instant boost to your outfit.
- Buy clothing that fits and flatters and isnt boxy in shape. Choose styles of clothing that frame the body – that create an hourglass figure, regardless of your current shape. Buying clothing that is too big only makes you look bigger. STOP HIDING!
- Take pride in yourself when you get dressed every morning. Wear those jeans that you feel great in, add an accessory that polishes your casual outfit, add a fun purse and feel good about who you ARE, YOU DESERVE TO !
MY FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP !!!!!!!!!!
Savers, a chain of thrift stores! They are a national chain with stores across the U.S. and Canada. They offer an amazing assortment of quality clothing at an AMAZING PRICE. I admire and respect the neat and orderly conditions of the store, the friendly staff and the ENDLESS SELECTION of designer merchandise! They also partner with charitable organizations across the country. It is truly a fashion treasure hunt. If you want to begin re-inventing your look or you simply want to add some new, fun and flattering pieces to your wardrobe, make this a new weekly habit! Stop in to your local Savers and see what is in store for you. I recently spoke to a customer who shopped in the newest store in Orange, CT. She came back twice in one day and said the shopping experience at Savers was better than you know what ? HA
Here are some pictures that I took visiting the new store in Orange. You can see, I had a blast building outfits and dressing the shoppers. HAPPY SHOPPING !

~THE SPRING FASHION FORECAST looks H-O-T for 2010 ~
The month of January oftens sparks the thought of re-invention and self-improvement. In fashion, it’s also a time to see what the designers have in store for us for the Spring. It’s a time when we often loose the layers and expose more of our body, hence another motivator to get healthy and in shape!
Spring 2010, I’m calling the season of the LEG and SHOULDER!
Designers are showing interesting cutting designs and exposing lots of shoulder. In tops, this is a wonderful way to dress up a pair of dark denim, black pants, shorter shirts and for shoes: shoe boots or heels. Wear these sexy tops out with friends, to an event or to dinner with your husband.

GET SHOULDER READY with this exercise from Carolyn: There are actually three parts of the shoulder (deltoids), the front, the side and the rear of the shoulder. One exercise that you want to incorporate into your routine in order to hit all these shoulder muscles and get sexy toned and ready to be revealed shoulders is called a shoulder press. This exercise can easily be performed at home or your gym, and is many times found in a lot of group fitness classes(ask your instructor to include in your routine). You will need to purchase dumbbells for home. The weight should be something that will allow you to be able to accomplish 12 repetitions for each exercise. 5-8 pounds is a good suggested starting weight for most women. You should do 2-3 sets of twelve repetitions. Once you are able to push out more than 12 repetitions, you should increase weight. This exercise should not be done more than 2-3 times weekly.

Hemlines are coming up ladies ! Boy shorts, hot pants and dresses with high slits scream, sporty and sexy! Balance out this legginess by wearing them back with sporty jackets and flowy, embellished tops and substantial footwear like ankle boots or a heavier heeled shoe.

GET THOSE LEGS in TIP TOP SHAPE with this exercise from Carolyn: I love plie squats for an overall leg work out. This exercise will get the inner and outer thigh as well as you front of the legs(quadriceps) and back of the legs(hamstrings). Perform this with weights resting on your legs. I would suggest 12-20 repetitions and 2-3 sets done with weight that will challenge you. A typical starting weight would be 8-12 pounds. 2-3 times a week is also suggested.

Fashion Eyewear is a fun way to infuse great style into your daily look. For many of us, we are required to wear glasses daily as a result of our eyesight. Many fashionistas also wear stylish frames just to have the “look” that frames create. Top designers have changed the way we see eyewear, creating frames that offer great color and pattern. Your glasses are an extension of your personality and lifestyle! There are a few important things to consider when selecting your stylish eyewear.
1) Compliment your face shape with the right style frame. Choose a frame that balances the shape of your face. For example, if you have a round face, choose a frame that is more square in shape.
2) Choose a style of frame that compliments your skin tone, eye color and scale of face. If you are petite for example, you want to consider a frame that isn’t to thick and overpowering. A frame should flatter, not hide.
3) Consider the look that you like and are naturally drawn to. Do you prefer a frame that stands out, that is more bold or a frame that is subtle and disappears? There are many choices available. For many of you, the ability to buy into a brand like Prada, Gucci, Coach even David Yurman is now a reality. These high-end designers all have eyewear collections that are much more affordable than their higher priced accessories. It is a fun way to experience the luxury of wearing designer brands.
Embrace the trends and the many styles available today in eyewear. Changing your eyewear can change your look. You might consider several pairs of glasses to create several looks for your lifestyle and your wardrobe. Choose a more conservative look for your daytime dress for the office and a pair of bold frames with color and/or a pattern for the weekend. You will find that you love the ability to create these different looks depending on your outfit choice and/or mood for the day. Having several pairs of eyewear is fast becoming as common as having multiple necklaces to choose from when accessorizing your outfits.
Take care of your eye health, get routine checkups and dress your eyes daily with a stylish pair of glasses!
If you are interested in a personal SPECS APPEAL consultation when choosing your next pair of eyewear contact me through http://www.harveyandlewis.com and schedule your personal appointment with me. It’s free and I guarantee that you will LOVE the look we create!

When we clean and purge our closets, I recommend that my clients donate or consign many of the items they no longer wear. In many cases older denim jeans and sneakers are simply too worn to fall in either of those categories. I found a few GREAT WAYS to RECYCLE these items. It IMPORTANT to do as much as we can to save the environment.
JEANS TOO JUNKIE?
Here are a few tips on how to recycle them:
- The back pocket of the jean can be cut (the entire section) and then sewn on the front of a pillow. This is easy to do and creates a fun pocket perfect for the tooth fairy or little love notes.
- If you use cloth diapers, denim is a nice thick diaper cover.
- Cut off the old pockets and sew them onto reusable grocery bags. They become nice holders for small items while you shop.
- Strips of denim can be cut and tied around a bottle of wine or to make decorative ornaments.
SNEAKERS ARE TOO SMELLY ~
Here are a few tips to recycle them:
- Check out Nike’s REUSE A SHOE – a program that after use recycles EVERY part of the sneaker to make playground materials.
- Donate your old Kenneth Cole shoes and receive a 20% discount.
- If the laces are in good condition – wash them and keep them as spares.
- Other great shoe recycling websites – souls4souls and recycled runners.
ENJOY ! I hope you learned a few valuable tips!

White is a crisp, clean color that should be a wardrobe staple in your closet this season. It’s a great summer look but it can also be a very temperature appropriate color to wear as the heat index rises. I thought I’d share some of my favorite summer white tips with you as you dare to wear white this summer. I find most women are afraid of summer white pants for two primary reasons. 1) Visible Panty Lines and 2) Stain control.
I encourage my clients to try Soma’s vanishing lines panties. They truly eliminate the worry of inappropriate undergarment coverage. They have seamless edges and are made from flexible silicone, together this combination provides comfort and confidence. Also, NEVER choose the color WHITE when purchasing your undergarments. If you have lighter skin choose nude undergarments and if you have darker skin choose tan or brown colors. These colors will blend the best. White will show when layered under white. You also want to choose a seamless bra that fits you appropriately for the best look under light tees this summer. The Allura bra by Soma is a good choice to complete your confident undergarment look for summer. You can see these great panties and wonderful bra’s on http://www.soma.com.
Damage control for your stain worries can be contained by carrying the TIDE To Go Bleach Pen with you this summer. Its a makeup bag must have.
Some top picks for GREAT WHITE BOTTOMS:
White jeans are a wonderful staple item for the closet. Denim is a safe way to incorporate white into your closet while feeling comfortable and confident. Christopher Blue makes a wonderful white denim jean for approximately $150. They have wonderful pocket placement in the back to enhance your rear view, while the waistline is high enough and sits naturally to ensure comfort. They are truly made for a woman. My favorite styles have a boot cut or flared leg. 7 for All Mankind is a more fashion forward look with a lower waist and a more fitted leg. This is a wonderful modern jean.
A nice, airy pair of white linen pants is also a personal must have recommendation. They look wonderful worn with the appropriate undergarments and can be dressed up or down. Pair with a tee shirt or a halter top. Wear them with flip flops or wedge heels. The wrinkled, relaxed look says that you are a women of style, class and grace.
LOOK YOUR PERSONAL BEST EVERY DAY – YOU DESERVE TO !
Enjoy ~

The Maxi Dress -
Here are the top 5 reasons to own this seasons throwback trend that has been revived.
1) It’s current, happening and stylish.
2) It’s comfortable – and easy to wear.
3) It transitions easily from day into night.
4) It’s easy to pack for vacation.
5) It’s a flattering style on most body types.
My recommendations when searching for your great maxi dress (or multiple) dresses. Look for a more neutral or quiet print. Stay with a dress that hits to the ankle for daytime and dont be afraid to layer it with a colored tank. I HIGHLY recommend a flip flop or simple flat sandal during the day.
In the evening, take that same dress, layer with a cardigan and jewelry and for shoes wear a pretty wedge heel. You can also layer the dress with a nice lightweight scarf and chunky bracelet.
If you are attracted to a bolder printed maxi, be careful that the print isnt too abstract. This could take away from the dress itself.
Where to find the best maxi: many of your local boutiques carry this trend as do stores like Target and Nordstrom. My favorite website is http://www.shopstyle.com. They have an amazing assortment of these dresses.

I LOVE when I discover tried and true home remedies that cure some of those stubborn cleaning issues we all face. Here is one that I found in this months First Magazine and MSN Money.
Beauty and Skincare Tips:
Insect bite treatment. Make a paste with powdered milk and water (try equal parts powdered milk and water) and a dash of salt. It will take care of the irritants in the bites and bring relief from the itchiness.
Sunburn relief. A little milk applied to sunburn will soothe your skin and make you feel less toasty for a while. For ease of application, you can use the paste recipe above for insect bites.
Skin moisturizer. For a dry skin remedy, rub some cold milk on your skin and allow it to absorb the nutrients. Be sure to rinse off afterward though, or you may smell a little sour by the following morning.
Makeup remover. Shake up some powdered milk and warm water until it has a creamy consistency. Apply with a facecloth or cotton ball, then wipe it off and rinse well with water.
Face mask. For a home spa facial, use water and powdered milk to make a thick paste and spread it on your face. Relax for 20 minutes until it dries, then rinse thoroughly. It will both clean and moisturize your face wonderfully. Not to mention the fact that you just sat and did nothing for 20 minutes. The relaxation aspect of facials is not to be underestimated.
Milk bath. Add some powdered milk to your bath and have a nice soak. An ancient technique that is still used in some parts of the world, it is wonderful for moisturizing the skin, and quite a luxurious treat.
THESE ARE MY FAVORITE FASHION FIXES ~
Polish silver. Sour your milk by adding some lemon or vinegar. Then soak your silver in the mixture for about half an hour, wash the silver with soapy water, buff it up and watch it shine.
Spiff up your patent leather. The last pair of patent leather shoes I owned go a while back now, but if you’ve got ‘em, now you can clean ‘em. Rub a thin layer of milk on them, let it dry, and then polish until they gleam again.
I ALSO LIKE CLEANING PATENT LEATHER WITH CLEAR WINDEX – this works like a charm…
Enjoy these helpful hints !
